Why Does Obtaining Qualifications Not Mark the End of a Train Driver’s Education?

The profession of a train driver requires not only obtaining the necessary qualifications but also continuously developing knowledge and skills. The rapid advancement of railway technologies, modern rolling stock and communication systems means that learning does not end once qualifications have been acquired. Szymon Wiśniewski, Head of the Professional Qualifications Department at Koleje Wielkopolskie, explains why continuous professional development has become an integral part of a train driver’s career.

The qualification process begins with training leading to a train driver licence, followed by the acquisition of a train driver certificate. However, as Szymon Wiśniewski points out, this is only the beginning of a professional career.

The expert emphasises that technological progress in the railway sector places increasingly high demands on train drivers. Not only are trains becoming more advanced, but the communication and information systems used in daily operations are evolving as well. To perform their duties safely and professionally, train drivers must constantly update their knowledge and skills.

Szymon Wiśniewski notes that the Polish railway sector is currently undergoing intensive modernisation.

“We are beneficiaries of the development of rail transport in Poland, but this also comes with the need to continuously expand our knowledge and competencies in order to meet the challenges that this profession presents every day,” he explains.

As the Head of the Professional Qualifications Department concludes, a commitment to lifelong learning and continuous professional development is now one of the most important qualities of a successful train driver.
