What Determines Railway Safety and How Can It Be Effectively Maintained?

Safety on the railway is the result of cooperation between numerous services and professionals responsible for the efficient functioning of rail transport. Clearly defined roles and responsibilities are important, but equally crucial are information sharing, joint training exercises and mutual support in emergency situations. Grzegorz Przysiężny, Commander of the Railway Protection Guard at PKP SKM in Tricity, explains why cooperation is the foundation of railway operations.

As the expert emphasises, the Railway Protection Guard works closely on a daily basis with a number of organisations, including the Police, the Railway Protection Guard of PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe (PKP PLK), the Border Guard and the Territorial Defence Forces. Joint exercises conducted on railway infrastructure help all services prepare for crisis situations and continuously improve response procedures.

“Each service has specific responsibilities during railway incidents. Firefighters carry out evacuations, police officers respond to criminal acts, and we deal with offences and railway security-related matters,” explains Grzegorz Przysiężny.

He adds that the effectiveness of these activities does not result solely from clearly divided responsibilities, but above all from proper coordination and close cooperation between all the services involved.

The Commander also highlights the importance of cooperation between Railway Protection Guard officers and railway employees. The rapid exchange of information about potential threats, mutual support and vigilance help identify dangerous situations at an early stage and prevent them more effectively.

Railway safety is built every day through the commitment of many people and organisations. It is cooperation, effective communication and coordinated action that form the foundation for protecting passengers and railway infrastructure.
