The Importance of Concentration and Experience in the Work of a Train Driver

What role do experience, concentration and readiness to respond to critical situations play in ensuring railway safety? Adam Łagoda, Director of the IT Department at the Office of Rail Transport (UTK), explains that while train drivers do not frequently encounter emergency situations, the way they respond when they do is one of the clearest measures of their professionalism.

The expert points out that experience is gained gradually through everyday operational duties. Equally important is the ability to maintain concentration and anticipate potential hazards before they develop into real threats. This enables train drivers to take appropriate action at an early stage, increasing the overall safety of train operations.

“If a train driver is able to anticipate certain situations in advance and react to them early, they are providing safety,” emphasises Adam Łagoda, noting that these are precisely the qualities sought both during training and in the examination of future train drivers.

The safe operation of a train requires not only solid theoretical preparation but also the continuous development of practical skills, experience and the ability to remain fully focused. It is this combination of knowledge, competence and foresight that enables train drivers to respond effectively, even in demanding and unpredictable situations.
