A Train to the Future: SKM Joins Forces with Warsaw University of Technology

Szybka Kolej Miejska (SKM) and the Faculty of Transport, Warsaw University of Technology, are launching a long-term partnership. On 26 August, the parties signed a letter of intent and a five-year framework agreement, opening the way for joint research and development projects, as well as initiatives supporting the development of future railway professionals.

The partnership is primarily based on the exchange of knowledge and experience between SKM experts and the academic community. It also creates opportunities for a wide range of expert, educational, scientific and industry-related initiatives. In addition, it may serve as a starting point for addressing issues important to the development of rail transport, the education of future specialists, and the stronger integration of academic knowledge with industry practice.

The agreement was signed by Maria Wasiak, President of the Management Board of Szybka Kolej Miejska, and Prof. Marianna Jacyna, Dean of the Faculty of Transport, Warsaw University of Technology.

Where Industry Meets Academia

The launch of cooperation between Szybka Kolej Miejska and the Faculty of Transport, WUT, is a natural step towards combining the strengths of both communities to support the development of rail transport and encourage broader discussion on the challenges and needs of the sector.

“The signed agreement gives us an opportunity to strengthen our links with the academic community and creates space for joint initiatives. It also allows us to look at selected issues from a scientific perspective and benefit from the expertise of specialists from the Faculty of Transport, WUT. We see particular value in this kind of dialogue,” said Maria Wasiak.

An important part of the partnership is also its focus on the development of young professionals. Closer cooperation between students and the rail operator will give them an opportunity to learn about the specifics of urban rail transport, gain insight into the realities of working in the railway sector, and apply the knowledge acquired during their studies in practice. For SKM, it is an opportunity to stay connected with future specialists and gain a better understanding of their perspective.

SKM Joins the Science–Business Advisory Council

The signing of the agreement is not the only step towards strengthening relations between the two institutions. SKM has also joined the Science–Business Advisory Council of the Faculty of Transport, Warsaw University of Technology, where the company will be represented by President of the Management Board Maria Wasiak.

The Council serves as an advisory body that aims to align academic research with market needs. Through its participation, SKM will be able to contribute a practical industry perspective to discussions on educating future specialists. It also provides a foundation for further strengthening cooperation between academia and industry, benefiting students, the academic community, the Capital City of Warsaw, and the railway sector as a whole.
