Responsibility and Competence: The Foundations of Safe Railway Operations
Preparing for the profession of a train driver involves far more than learning how to operate a train. Equally important is developing a strong sense of responsibility and the competencies needed to respond appropriately in any situation. Adam Łagoda, Director of the IT Department at the Office of Rail Transport (UTK), discusses the importance of the training process.
The expert emphasises that from the very first stages of training, future train drivers should understand the significant responsibility they bear for passenger safety. For this reason, the training process must be carefully designed to develop both the knowledge and practical skills required for the safe operation of trains.
“The most important aspect is responsibility for the people travelling behind you,” says Adam Łagoda. As he explains, much like in aviation, competence in rail transport is built over many years. Regular training and accumulated experience help develop the right habits and decision-making patterns, which are crucial in situations requiring quick and accurate judgement.
As the expert notes, a novice train driver is still gaining experience. Therefore, it is essential that training equips candidates with the skills necessary to perform the profession responsibly and provides opportunities for their continued development. This ongoing process forms one of the key foundations of safe railway operations.
