Good Communication as the Foundation of Railway Safety
The efficient exchange of information between train drivers, traffic controllers and the services responsible for railway operations plays a crucial role in ensuring the safe and smooth movement of trains. Adam Wawrzyniak, Member of the Management Board for Operations at PKP Intercity, discusses the importance of effective communication in preventing threats and maintaining railway safety.
The expert emphasises that train drivers are often the first to notice irregularities along the route, whether related to infrastructure conditions or circumstances that may pose a risk to rail operations. The prompt reporting of such information to the traffic controller enables an immediate assessment of the situation and the implementation of appropriate procedures.
“The first step is communication between the train driver and the traffic controller. Its importance cannot be overstated,” says Adam Wawrzyniak. He explains that only after receiving such a report can the infrastructure manager take further action and coordinate cooperation with the relevant services responsible for responding to potential threats.
He notes that railway safety is based not only on established procedures but also on effective communication and proper employee training. For this reason, during regular refresher training, PKP Intercity continuously reinforces train drivers’ awareness of the importance of accurate information sharing, emphasising that fast and precise communication remains one of the most important elements of safe railway operations.
