By bike and SKM? How to transport bicycles and where to go beyond Warsaw

Is transporting bicycles on trains becoming increasingly popular?

Definitely, especially during the spring and summer season. On the busiest routes, such as those towards Radzymin or Zegrze Południowe, as many as 100–120 cyclists may travel on weekends. This shows how popular rail connections have become among people planning active leisure trips outside Warsaw.

Are SKM trains prepared for such large numbers of bicycles?

Our vehicles are designed to carry up to eight bicycles. This corresponds to the number of hooks or racks available for securing them. Of course, we see growing interest and try not to artificially limit the number of bicycles carried. The key principle is that bicycles must always be transported safely.

There are situations where passengers place bicycles near doorways, making boarding and alighting difficult. Such situations are unacceptable, and train staff are required to intervene.

What is the correct way to transport a bicycle on SKM?

First of all, it is worth remembering that within Warsaw Public Transport, including SKM trains, bicycle transport is free of charge.

Folding bicycles are treated as regular luggage. In the case of standard bicycles, we recommend using the first or last doors of the train—this is where designated bicycle spaces are located.

In newer vehicles, the use of hooks is gradually being phased out. Instead, special areas are increasingly available where bicycles can be positioned upright without the need to lift them.

What should you do if all bicycle spaces are already occupied?

Most carriages offer additional space where bicycles can be transported. However, it is important to remember a key rule—priority is always given to passengers with reduced mobility and parents travelling with prams.

If it is not possible to place the bicycle safely, the cyclist may be asked to leave the train. This solution is not always well received, but the regulations clearly define these priorities.

What mistakes should cyclists avoid?

The biggest issue is placing bicycles in doorways. This makes passenger flow difficult and, in emergency situations, may hinder evacuation.

It is also important to secure the bicycle properly. The passenger is responsible for the bicycle during transport. In the event of sudden braking, an improperly positioned bicycle may fall over and pose a risk to others.

Cyclists should also avoid dirtying fellow passengers with wheels or chains. Especially during peak hours, when trains are crowded, it is worth considering whether travelling with a bicycle at that time is the best option.

Are peak hours a good time to travel with a bicycle?

SKM has not introduced restrictions on carrying bicycles during peak hours, but common sense should prevail. If possible, it is better to travel before 6:30 a.m. or after 9:00 a.m., and in the afternoon before 2:30 p.m. or after 5:00 p.m. This makes it easier to find space and avoid unnecessary conflicts with other passengers.

Can passengers without bicycles also help make travel easier?

Definitely. Boarding and alighting with a bicycle often requires cooperation from other passengers. Sometimes, simply moving a bit further into the carriage or making a little space near the doors can significantly improve comfort for everyone.

Which destinations are most popular among cyclists?

The areas around Piaseczno and Zalesie are very popular, offering many green spaces and forest trails. Cyclists also frequently choose the surroundings of the Zegrze Reservoir, Radzymin and Nieporęt. The Otwock line is also highly popular—from Wawer to Otwock stretches the scenic Mazowiecki Landscape Park. It is also worth considering the areas around Pruszków and Sulejówek, which offer many attractive forest routes.

What message would you like to share with cyclists using SKM?

Above all, I would like to appeal for common sense, patience and following the instructions of train staff. When staff draw attention to certain behaviours, it is not out of ill will, but out of concern for the safety of everyone on board.

Bicycles and rail complement each other perfectly. Thanks to SKM, it is easy to reach many attractive destinations around Warsaw and then continue the journey on two wheels. It is worth taking advantage of this opportunity, while remembering the rules that allow everyone to travel comfortably and safely.
